WINTER in the south…brrrrr

Well, winter has hit with a vengeance! Normally we’d be sunning ourselves in a warm climate now, but not this year 😦

Making the most of time here though. Enjoyed watching the changing of the seasons around the district. The colours of the trees were beautiful and the crisp clean air in the mornings make up for the cold wet soggy days.

Due to restrictions not a lot of wandering the area or eating out, but I’ve put a couple of pics up of my one day out recently. Clare has a new mural in a side street near the Council Chambers, and it’s a beauty.

We’ve had a couple of frosts, which has killed off some of my plantings, but most usually recover. Hubby not so happy about winter; wakes up in the dark and gets home from work in the dark!

With restrictions easing up a bit now, I should be able to post more interesting blogs soon. Can’t wait to visit a few more wineries in the beautiful Clare Valley!

Alpaca Shearing 101

Last weekend I witnessed the fine art of shearing alpacas! I thought it was just as interesting as sheep shearing, although danger money should be included….they spit, they kick and they are way bigger than sheep!!

The two boys agisted here and two others were penned and pampered! The mobile alpaca shearer brings their table and equipment  and sets up, and the boys are secured on the table whilst being shorn. When one sides done they get flipped!

Most of the alpacas were well behaved, only one carried on every time the razor started, which was quite funny really. Only one spit and one kick over the four which was good odds! The Shearer did show me what the previous alpacas left all over the side of his ute! 😛

So now we have a couple of skinny alpacas that resemble deers wandering the paddock! I reckon the alpaca shearers earn their money – they also check their teeth, trim hoofs and vaccinate.

Da Block!

Christmas and New Year came and went in a blink of an eye. We are now settled on our block in the Clare Valley of SA! Yes, we have our own block!

It’s been a long process but some land we first saw in June last year finally became available….so now it’s ours!! After 12 1/2 years on the road we now can use this as a base….that’s all, as we still wish to travel Australia as much as we can…before we can’t!!

We moved the van onto the ‘house site’ area next to the shed. The rest of the block is pasture for sheep. B feels right at home, but I’m having more trouble….keep thinking we’re doing another house sit for someone!! Jeda loves it. She’s used to sheep, but these big dogs called Alpacas that make a weird noise when she comes too close are crazy!

Over the next few months we hope to do some improvements: a septic, solar and some plantings. So travel is on hold for just a short while, but we have big plans for winter this year…..hint: BRB & Races….Birdsville, Qld…….wanna come???!!!
